Judith Rawlins grew up in a home where her mother actively worked as a seamstress. Although she never recognized a career in fashion at this early stage, she was trained in sewing techniques, and was great at helping clients select styles for various occasions. Perhaps leaning to sew was more for self help, as often Judith’s personal desire for new clothes was too much for her mom’s hectic schedule.

In 1994, Judith returned home to St.Kitts from University with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, while working actively in the field, Judith’s passion for fashion led her to develop her first line of clothing which she dubbed “Brown Sugar”. The name was symbolic: In trying to be easily identified as a local product, the play on the meaning was simple, since St.Kitts has produced brown sugar for over 300 years. Yet there was an extended meaning, for sugar was the word often used to identify the character of Caribbean women, sweet irresistible and traditional.

Brown Sugar has been featured in several local media including The St.kitts Music Festival Magazine. Other media include The Liat Islander and Panache Magazine, and have participated in shows in Barbados, Antigua, Tortola, St.Maarteen, Grenada, New York and London. Click to return to the show

In 2002 and 2003, Brown Sugar was awarded by Caribbean Export as Outstanding Product Line in fashion at the annual Caribbean Gift and Craft Show.
